Pediatric Ophthalmology in children-Issues affecting our little ones !!

Must Read

Study results show that every one in six children has problems with their eyesight and other Pediatric issues. These are some of the most common vision problems that today’s children are facing:

  • Lazy eyes:- Both Pediatric cataracts and strabismus can produce amblyopia. Your child’s vision is blurry in one or both eyes because the relationship between the brain and the eye did not develop properly. Young child’s unrecognized need for spectacles IS the most common cause of amblyopia. The brain may stop using the weaker eye if one eye is stronger than the other. A child specialist  will address the underlying condition if at all possible. On the stronger eye, they may prescribe a patch or eyedrops.

Amblyopia

  • Refractive-error:- In normal eyes with no refractive error, objects produce a clear and focused image on the retina, which is the innermost layer at the back of the eye. An emmetropic eye is what this is termed. The individual’s age, how far or close the object is to the eyes, general health and eye-related factors such as tear film health, curvature of the cornea (transparent layer in front of the eye), curvature & thickness of the lens inside the eye, and the length of the eyeball are all important factors that influence this ability to focus. Images are concentrated in front of the retina when the front of the eye is steeper, the lens is too thick or curved, or the eyeball is too long. In other words, the focusing point for that eye is too short, and items closest to that eye look well focused while those further away appear blurry. Short-sightedness, or myopia, is the medical term for this.

  • Squints:- Although genetic or familial factors can induce strabismus, the specific cause of squinting is not always recognized. Squints can be acquired as a consequence of the eye attempting to correct a vision problem, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, or as a result of diminished vision in one eye, resulting in a lazy eye and squint. Nerve paralysis or weakening in the nerves that control the ocular muscles that move the eyes can also induce squinting. Paralytic squints are the name for these squints.

  • Drooping of upper eyelids:-  The condition of ptosis is when the upper eyelid droops across the eye. The pupil may be partially or totally hidden by the eyelid (the black dot at the center of your eye that lets light in). Ptosis can affect the Both toddlers and adults also.

  • Pediatric cataract:-A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s normally clear lens. They might be present at birth or appear at any time during childhood. Although a little cataract may not require treatment, a child specialist should check your child’s vision. Cataracts can impair vision in certain people. A pediatric specialist can surgically remove them.

  • Congenital glaucoma:- It’s a kind of glaucoma, a group of disorders in which the optic nerve is damaged by excessive fluid pressure in the eye. It affects children between the ages of one and three years. PCG, or primary congenital glaucoma, is a dangerous disorder that requires immediate care. It affects around one out of every 10,000 babies. Cases that go untreated are a leading cause of childhood blindness. Doctors often detect it between the ages of three and six months, but there may be no symptoms at first.

  • Retinopathy of prematurity:-Around 16 weeks, a newborn’s retinal blood vessels begin to grow in the womb and continue to increase until the baby is delivered. As a result, an early birth may disrupt or cause abnormal development. The most vulnerable babies are those born before 31 weeks of pregnancy or weighing less than 1500 grams at birth. There are no signs or symptoms when ROP first arises in a neonate. The only method to diagnose it is via an pediatric ophthalmologist’s eye exam.

What is Pediatric Ophthalmology?

Early detection and ophthalmology could help us tackle situations like these with little bit of ease. Pediatric ophthalmologist is a child specialist concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders in children. Children’s eyes are not the same as adults’ eyes, and a ophthalmologist has additional training, experience, and skill in evaluating children, as well as the greatest knowledge of any problems that affect the patient and his or her eyes.

Refractive errors, pink eye, eye rubbing, eye misalignment, eye watering, and other visual problems are common in children. Ophthalmologist Can treat other Diseases from other regions of the body that can also affect the eyes.

Eye problems in children differ from those in adults because vision problems in children can affect neural development, causing their eyes to become “lazy,” a condition known as amblyopia. To ensure the development of good vision in both eyes and to avoid lazy eyes, early identification and treatment are essential.
