The Different Types of Syringes You Need To Know

Over half a billion syringes are manufactured every year in the US alone. Whether for vaccinations, blood donations, or just basting the Thanksgiving turkey, syringes are vital to modern life.

But despite their importance, so few of us understand what separates the different types of syringes. Heck, how many of us really understand that there are different types of syringes?

Well, don’t feel bad about that ignorance just yet. We’re here to walk you through the various types of medical syringes that are in use today. From the common to the bizarre, here are some of the types of syringes used for injections across the world.

The Good Old Luer Lock Syringe

If you’ve ever had an injection, chances are you have a Luer lock syringe to thank for the experience. These syringes feature a clever locking mechanism that ensures the needle stays solidly in place and no fluids leak out around the seal.

Slip Tip

The best thing about the slip tip is how self-explanatory its name is! How does a slip tip syringe work? Well, you slip the needle onto the end of it, of course. Where the Luer lock syringe screws in for a secure fit, the slip tip creates a seal by the simple act of being slipped over the specially-designed end of the syringe itself.

Eccentric Tip Syringes

Contrary to its name, the eccentric tip is another of the common types of syringes. Its end is off-center in order to facilitate injections into arteries. Besides that, it can be used for any injection where the syringe has to be held parallel to the injection site.

Catheter Syringe Tip

This is a pretty big syringe that’s generally used for the ‘heavier’ tasks that syringes have to perform. You can move a lot of fluid through these kinds of tips, which makes them great for things like irrigation, less great for administering tiny amounts of medicine. Still, if you want to clean out some medical equipment, the catheter syringe is your guy!

Micro Syringes

The tiny brother of the other common types of syringes. Micro syringes are, as you might have guessed, absolutely minuscule. These tiny guys can move infinitesimal amounts of fluid and medicine into an injection site, which makes them great for super potent medicines.

On the scale of syringe sizes, catheter syringes are at one end, and these guys are at the other. If you want to know more about them, just click for more!

The Many Different Types of Syringes

That concludes our merry tour through the different types of syringes in use today. From medical equipment maintenance to vaccination, these needles play a vital role in keeping us safe, happy, and healthy. No wonder we make so many of them!
