The Different Types of Home Heating Systems

If you live in a cold-weather area, home heating isn’t an option; it’s a necessity. Fortunately, there are a number of different types of home heating systems out there for homeowners to utilize.

Curious as to the different home heating systems available to you? Then read on because we’re going to review them in detail now.

Furnace

The most popular home heating system is the furnace. Coming with both gas-powered and electricity-powered capabilities, these machines generate heat and then send it through ducts as a means of transferring it to different rooms throughout the house.

Furnaces are easy to run, durable, and simple to take care of. They’re also quite cost-effective compared to many other heating options.

Boiler

Another heating option to consider is the boiler system. Boilers can be powered by either electricity or gas, and work by heating water to extreme temperatures. This heated water is then sent through pipes which radiate and heat rooms throughout the house.

Boilers are a little more expensive than furnaces. Note, though, that they’re also more efficient, and therefore, are often cheaper to run. It should also be noted that, because they don’t use ducts, they allow for cleaner air overall.

Radiant Heating

Radiant heating involves the use of radiators. These can be mounted on baseboards or even buried inside walls or under floors. They’re run 100% on electricity.

While radiant heating is highly effective, it’s extremely expensive as well, both to install and to run. That said, if you have the money, it might very well be the best choice.

Heat Pump

Next, we’re going to talk about heat pumps. These make use of geothermal energy from the ground and are capable of producing both heat and cold. As such, they can be used as equal parts heating systems and air conditioners.

It’s important to note, however, that heat pumps can struggle in exceedingly low temperatures. So, if you live in an area that commonly goes below 30 degrees Fahrenheit, you might want to opt for something else.

Pellet Stove

We’ll end our article by discussing pellet stoves. These are similar to wood stoves in that they require you to add a fuel source as a means of keeping them running. However, instead of adding logs, you must add specially-made wood pellets.

Pellet stoves are quite effective and, in many circumstances, can be cheaper to run than all other heating systems. Note, though, that they require a great deal of maintenance.
