The hardest part about the keto diet is getting into ketosis, without a doubt. Starting that magical fat-burning process can be tricky and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you might quit before you even get started.
Being in Ketosis feels so energizing and amazing, that it’s worth the work it takes to get into it. And thanks to hundreds of thousands of people who’ve done (and are doing) the keto diet, you’re not alone.
We’ve got some great tips on how to enter ketosis, and how to stay there, below.
1. Reduce Your Carbs Leading Up to Starting Keto
One of the best things you can do for your keto success is the reduce the carbs you’re eating a week or two weeks before you officially start keto. That might look like switching to higher-fiber options (like chickpea) pasta or cutting out high-sugar fruits.
This should be a gradual process so that when you officially transition to the super-low carb ketosis diet, it’s easier for you to maintain.
The last thing you want to do is called the “last supper” phenomenon, where you eat everything you won’t be able to eat on keto right before starting it, as a final hurrah. Not only does this make it harder to enter ketosis, but it’s also a sign of disordered eating.
Keto isn’t about what you’re giving up – it’s about what you’re going to get from being in ketosis.
2. Intermittent Fasting
Before you start keto or consider intermittent fasting, you should talk to your doctor. We know that sentence is ignored about as often as “I’ve read the terms and conditions”, but it’s truly important.
Intermittent fasting involves not eating for a prolonged period, which is dangerous for certain health conditions. If you’re diabetic and starting keto, do not do intermittent fasting without medical approval.

3. Drink Lots of Water
You know those gallon jugs that were going viral on TikTok for a while? The ones that have the times listed on the side?
Buying those when you’re trying to get into ketosis isn’t a bad idea. Not only are most people already dehydrated, but it will keep you fuller longer.
Plus, there’s truth to that meme that says if you drink a gallon of water a day, you won’t have time for drama, because you’ll be in the bathroom every thirty minutes.
How to Enter Ketosis: Make a Plan and Stick to It
Starting the keto diet isn’t something you should do on a whim. We know it’s hard to not jump in right away when you’re excited about something, but you’ll actually set yourself up for success if you create a plan for how to enter ketosis.
We hope you found the tips above helpful and that they help you get into the fat-burning state this diet is known for.
