You may know Josh Homme as the lead singer and guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age. With his falsetto voice and unusual style of guitar playing, it’s easy to see why he’s left a mark on the 1990s rock scene.
Despite being the one mainstay of this rock band since its 1996 founding, though, how much do you know about Josh Homme?
Stick around and we’ll share seven Josh Homme fun facts that’ll have you clicking through QOTSA’s discography once again.
1. He’s Been in More Than One Band
Queens of the Stone Age wasn’t Josh Homme’s only project. He also founded a punk-rock band with his friends called Kyuss in 1987. Only fourteen at the time, Kyuss lived on for eight years before disbanding in 1995.
Homme also joined Screaming Trees in 1996 as a touring guitarist. Creative differences lead Homme to abandon the band and start Queens of the Stone Age.
This didn’t stop him from starting Eagles of Death Metal in 1998 or Them Crooked Vultures in 2009.
2. He’s Secretive About His Musical Equipment
Anyone familiar with Josh Homme’s songs knows that he’s got that one-of-a-kind sound. What are his secrets, you ask? We don’t know.
What we do know about is his deliberate choice of strange guitars. Among dozens of guitars, few of them are high quality. He even has Japanese guitars and guitars that are deformed in some way.
3. He Started a Charity
In 2013, Homme started the Sweet Stuff Foundation. Their goal is to help musically-inclined people with disabilities or illnesses.
Due to everyday expenses, some aspiring rock musicians can’t afford to spend money on their passions. The Sweet Stuff Foundation also helps families who need help with childcare, intuition, and more.
4. He Met His Wife During His Screaming Trees Era
While touring with Screaming Trees in 1996, he met his future wife Brody Dalle at Lollapalooza. They would not reconnect again until 2003. Two years later they wed and gave birth to three children.
Unfortunately, they divorced in 2019 due to Homme’s drug and alcohol use. According to Rolling Stone, the two rock musicians are involved in a custody battle over their five-year-old son.
5. He’s Driven the Same Car since 1987
The birth of the Kyuss era started around the same time Josh Homme received his first car.
This car is a silver 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, which he still drives today. Since then, he’s purchased a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic and a Falcon.
6. He Plays Many Instruments
Guitars aren’t the only instrument that defines the Josh Homme music style. Like other talented rock musicians, Homme can play piano, banjo, bass, and drums.
In fact, Homme was initially interested in playing drums as a kid, but his parents got him a guitar instead. He started taking guitar lessons when he was nine years old.
7. He’s a Producer, Too
You’ll find Josh Homme doing more than tearing up the stage during concerts. He’s tried his hand at producing, too. On Arctic Monkeys’ 2009 album “Humbug,” listen for traces of Homme’s influence.
He also provided backing vocals for “All My Own Stunts” and “Knee Socks.”
