Swimming with clothes on; which clothing is suitable?

Why swim with clothes on?

The clothing that the child must wear when swimming is of course subject to requirements. It is clear that these requirements become higher and higher as your child obtains a higher diploma. With A and B, there are no real differences. At C, yes. If your child goes even further, the requirements will be even higher. Comments on these requirements

Of course, certain requirements are quite vague. And maybe your pool thinks just a little more nuanced than the pool in another municipality. But in general, for example, surf shoes or ballet shoes are not allowed. In principle, the shoes should sink on their own. Leggings are also not allowed.

Learning to swim with clothes on

Fortunately, your child will soon start practicing with clothing during swimming lessons. During swimming lessons (per bath / group, or whatever they call this at your pool) more and more items of clothing are added. Now, of course, every swimming pool does that in its own way, but often they start with just a shirt on. This is followed by shorts etc.

What do you do to your child?

Of course, you can think smartly about what you are doing to your child. A thick wool sweater is of course exaggerated and certainly not recommended… But there are also requirements, as noted earlier, that you have to adhere to. For example, leggings are very useful as pants, but are simply not allowed. Just like surf shoes. What do you do? Do you have doubts whether something is allowed or not? Of course you ask this with the lifeguard or teacher of your child.

Shoes

You’ve probably seen them before, from those plastic water shoes. These are not mandatory, because ordinary shoes are also allowed. But these are heavy when they get wet and most shoes will not get nicer. Plastic does not suck up the water, so are nicer to swim with than fabric shoes. A disadvantage is perhaps that many water shoes have to be closed with a nasty buckle. If you can find a shoe that your child can easily put on and take off, then that is so nice .Just make sure the shoe fits snugly, otherwise they will go off while swimming! Also check if they are easy to detach after swimming.

Tip: Also simple gym shoes with a hard sole that you can buy for a few euros are suitable for swimming lessons. And do not suck up too much water.

Trousers

Pants, as mentioned earlier, should not be leggings (although this also makes a difference per pool how strictly this is taken). Usually there are certain requirements. So if you end up with real regular pants, you can still see if you can arrange a thinner variant for swimming lessons. Summer pants, for example, are thinner! In addition, it is mandatory at some schools that the pants are provided with a closure.

Shirt

For the swimming diplomas it is mandatory to swim with a long-sleeved shirt. Here too, a sweater often sucks up a lot more water and becomes heavier than, for example, a longsleeve. It is best to buy this spaciously tailored so that your child can put it on and especially take it off more easily after the swimming lesson when he is wet. Some swimming schools also accept it if you use a uv shirt with long sleeves.

Tip: If you put your shirt or sweater in the pants, the chance that it will crawl up while swimming is a lot smaller.

Jacket at diploma C

With diploma C, there is also a jacket with which you have to swim. A raincoat does not suck up the water. Also choose a jacket without a hood, because that also saves extra ballast. After all, a hood is full of water.

Not too tight

An extra tip: make sure you have clothes that are not too tight. Taking off wet clothes is not pleasant. If it is still very tight, it will be a disaster. And the swimming teacher or lifeguard will not be happy if he or she has to help every child to do everything …!

Don’t make it too easy
