KVPY and KVPY Exam Pattern

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana abbreviated as KVPY is a scholarship program examination that was started in the year 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The examination is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). 

KVPY

The aim of KVPY examination is to identify the students with talent and aptitude for research and motivate them to pursue a career in the field of research. The students who score above the cutoff marks in KVPY are provided with contingency grants and scholarships up to a period of five years or till pre PhD level. The examination is conducted once a year in online mode. The examination is conducted for 3 hours. The KVPY amplitude test for the year 2021 was conducted on November 7, 2021. 

The registration and filling of application forms have to be done online. The application form will have space for filling in personal and academic details. The scanned copy of the signature and photograph has to be uploaded along with the application form. The payment for the examination can be done via net banking, credit card or debit card. The examination fee amount will differ for different categories of students. 

The admit card for the examination is released online a few days after the application form is submitted. The candidates must download the admit card and carry it with them on the day of the examination. 

KVPY Exam Pattern

The KVPY examination is held under three streams – SA, SX and SB. The SA stream is for candidates who have enrolled for Class 11. The students who have enrolled for class 12 are eligible for the SX stream. The students who have enrolled in 1st year of the basic science stream will be allowed to appear for the SB stream. 

The test for the SA stream includes subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. For all the subjects, the examination is conducted in two parts, the first part includes 60 questions and the second part includes 20 questions. The students are expected to attempt all the questions in all four subjects. For every correct answer, the student gets 1 mark and if the answer goes wrong 0.25 marks will be deducted. The total marks allotted for the examination is 100 with a total of 25 marks allotted for each subject.The KVPY exam pattern for SB/SX stream also includes the same four subjects – Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry. The examination is for a total of 160 marks. The question paper consists of 2 parts. Part 1 includes a total of 80 questions and part 2 is for 40 questions. The students have to attempt a total of 80 questions from both parts. The students can attempt any three sections from four sections in part 1and any two sections from part 2. In part 1 every response is given 1 mark and 0.25 marks deducted for incorrect response. In part 2, 2 marks are allotted for every correct answer and 0.5 marks will be deducted for the wrong answers.
