The cockroach is not the most attractive creature on this planet but it is adept at surviving. In fact, scientists believe this is one of the few creatures that could survive a nuclear blast. The origins of the cockroach can be found in the Carboniferous period, that’s approximately 300-350 million years ago. Of course, they have evolved since.

However, your main concern, when seeing one, is how did they get to your house and what can you do to eliminate them?

Cockroach Attraction

Cockroaches, like most pests, are looking for food. If your home offers them the food they need then it’s an attractive place to stay. If you regularly have dirty dishes on the counter, crumbs on the floor, and you leave the pet food down, then you are going to attract pests.

It may not be sizeable or appetizing to you but it is a veritable feast to pests like cockroaches.

In short, if you’re offering food, even without realizing it, they’ll take you up on your offer.

Moisture

Cockroaches can survive for an extended period without water but they will still be attracted to anywhere that has easily accessible water. If you have standing water in your yard, leave the water bowl down for your pets, or have a leak in your plumbing. That’s all the moisture they need.

If you see one cockroach you need to eliminate it as there are almost certain to be more. It’s a good idea to call the exterminators straight away.

The most effective way to get rid of cockroaches is using your local pest control experts. But, it’s even better if you take steps to remove the attractiveness of your home, then you won’t have to deal with the issue.

Clean Your Home

Your home doesn’t need to be filthy to attract cockroaches. It simply needs to have food crumbs sat around. By washing your dishes straight away and wiping down surfaces you will be removing the attraction. Of course, you also need to vacuum the floor regularly and ideally store your food products in sealed containers.

This will make your home much less appealing to cockroaches and other pests.

Eliminate Standing Water

Standing water comes in many forms and it can be difficult to eliminate all sources in your garden. But, you can start with your home. That means picking up pet water bowls and checking your home for plumbing leaks. It is also worth looking at the moisture level in your home.

You can lower this via a number of natural methods or by using a dehumidifier.

Seal It Up

Clutter in or around your home will attract cockroaches as it gives them a place to hide. However, a key factor to any infestation is their ability to get into your home. Sealing all cracks and gaps in your walls and making sure there are brushes fitted to your doors will make it virtually impossible for a cockroach to get in. They will go somewhere else where access is easier.
